Tuesday, August 20th is International Radio Day . You remember a radio, that gadget with knobs and dials on it, AM and FM frequencies? Personally, I remember going to bed while listening to a few good radio shows when I was a kid.

Some of us may even have had a short wave radio that would allow the world into our houses. Some of us may even remember the mono sounds of a transistor radio by the likes od Juliette.

While transistor radios and even some of the old time boomboxes are a thing of the past, music, shows and radio listening in general is alive and kicking; on line.

Thanks to internet radios from Grace Digital , Logitech and Tivoli, not only can you listen to your local programming,, but local programming for Mexico Maine, or Mexico City Mexico, Lebanon New Hampshire, or Beirut Lebanon and many more. Grace Digital’s sets also offer Pandora on their radios as well.

Aside from those table top sets, the online radio listening craze has become totally portable, thanks to WiFi hot spots, 4g phone service and even mobile audio. There are several sites you can either listen to or download apps from to celebrate this milestone. They span genres, operating systems and devices. There are so many out there. Some are more popular and very well known, and others are a bit less known, but none the less broadcasting the world. There is even an app that allows you to listen to Police/Fire/EMS bands from over the world or across the street.

Some of the more popular ones that also have multi-platform apps, are;

iHeart Radio Pandora Absolute Radio (several separate genre apps as well Slacker Radio Tunein Radio (Free and Pro) Sirius/XM Radio App (fee based) Stitcher Radio

Some newer or maybe lesser known apps include;

Songza Twitter #music Soundwave Music Discovery iTuner radio Live 365 NPR Music

Is that all you can find ? Of course not. This is simply what is installed either on my iPhone, Mac Book Air, Windows 8 desktop or Android Tablet. If you simply search the respective application repository for you device with the search string “radio”, you will get hundreds of results. So grab your favorite headphones or pair your best Bluetooth speaker, listen away and celebrate international radio day.
