Apple's announcement yesterday didn't include any mention of the ever-popular Apple TV, but an update to the system will reportedly be released on the same day as iOS 7, Sept. 18. According to AllThingsD on Sept. 11, sources familiar with the subject supplied the info.
One of the main features mentioned by AllThingsD is that users will now be able to play content purchased on their iTunes account on someone else's Apple TV. It may not seem like an earth-shattering development, but for those who want to share their content without having to use AirPlay from their phone or iPad onto a friend's Apple TV, this will be the update they’ve been waiting for. This refresh will allow content to stream from the cloud to the device.
AppleInsider notes that this update will put the Apple device on the same level as Google’s recently released Chromecast, which works in a similar way. Prior to this admittedly still rumored update, Apple TV has been adding new channels to its lineup, including the Smithsonian Channel, WatchESPN, HBOGO and Vevo.
iDownloadBlog notes the update may also have some added features of custom subtitles, Conference Room Mode and automatic device configuration over Bluetooth.
But overall, Tom Chererdar for VentureBeat is underwhelmed by the impending update.
“...this isn’t a feature I’m very excited about, or one that will push the device much further than its already gone in terms of what it can do to enhance the TV watching experience. ... as we pointed out in the past, a simple refreshed version of the Apple TV really wouldn’t be much to get excited over. I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to see what else Apple is planning.”
Assuming the Apple TV update is built into iOS 7, we'll see what Apple has planned next week. Were you hoping for a little more fore the device?
