A spoof advertisement that originated with the famous 4chan online forum went viral, and resulted in a number of gullible people destroying their iPhones, the Independent reported on Tuesday.

The ad, shown above, implies that an upgrade to iOS 7 will waterproof iDevices. The ad claims:

“Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof. In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.

One user tweeted the following message :

Ok whoever said IOS7 is waterproof GO F*** YOURSELF

However, others were not kind to those who were gullible enough to test the faux waterproof feature of iOS 7.

One tweeted:

In all honesty, I think if you believe a new software update will make your iPhone 'waterproof' then you deserve to have it ruined.

A second tweeted :

How stupid must people be to fall for this...

Truly, to make a device waterproof involves either a special device with hardware modifications, like the Galaxy S4 Active, a waterproof case, or a special coating which is being tried on regular Galaxy S4s by SK Telecom.
