"Information is important…information is crucial…information is powerful," says author Russ Johnson in the video to the left, one that provides a big dose of his energetic and engaging personality.

A specialist in teacher training, teacher development and creative teaching, Johnson has launched a new book, Quick Student Engagement Ideas for Busy Teachers: Creative Ideas From 1,000 Remarkable Faculty & Students – a tome whose Kindle edition is 37% off the print list price right now.

The "poor teacher," as he once described himself, enthralls audiences with lessons on things like the familiarity trap, a humorous story recounting how Johnson delved into the reasons why his wife cut the end off the Thanksgiving ham each year. An investigation into the process revealed that it was a needless tradition to pass down, seeing as though his grandmother-in-law only began performing the ritual so that the piece of meat could fit inside her pan.

It's lessons like these, along with the "bring it on" roller coaster metaphor in the video – one showing Johnson gripping the ride's handlebars in terror with his crying son, while the kid behind them rides gleefully with hands raised in the air, ready to face the next twists and turns – that draws folks to glean truths from the successful teacher.

He's coined a new term for the "Information Age" in which we live -- calling this time of conversations broken by text alerts and Word With Friends "It's your move!" beeps the "Interruption Age" instead.

The fascinating part of the book's premise is that it contains the best teaching tips that Johnson culled from polling more than 1,000 educational resources -- including members of the faculty and college students -- to determine the methods that worked, and to learn the ones to ditch.

Remember that scene of the uber-bored students in class, staring at the hapless teacher in the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off as he incessantly called out "Bueller…Bueller…Bueller" ad nauseum whilst Matthew Broderick's character was off having the time of his life in downtown Chicago?

That's just one of the videos displayed on Johnson's TeacherTrainer.com website , a site that promotes the author's experience of training executives from prestigious companies such as Disney, American Express, Goldman-Sachs and JetBlue on how not to bore your audience to sleep.
