Move over, Coca-Cola. Apple has taken the top spot in the most influential brands of the world compiled by www.interbrand.com . Coca-Cola has had the top spot for the last 13 years, as long as list has been compiled. But now it has slid to number three with two computer companies surpassing it.
Blackberry, the past leader in mobile phone technology, has slid off of the top 100 list where it was 93rd last year, 56th the year before and 54th in 2010.
The top 10 brands are very well-known. It would be difficult to find someone who doesn't know them all. Most of the rest of the top 100 brands are also very easy to recognize although there are some that you might not readily remember.
The top 10 brands (listed from #1 to #10) are
Apple
Google
Coca-Cola
IBM
Microsoft
GE
McDonald's
Samsung
Intel
Toyota.
Eight of the top 10 brands are US companies. Samsung is from South Korea and Toyota is from Japan. Seven of the 10 are technology companies.
Interbrand ranks company brands using three measures. Financial performance, the role the brand plays in influencing customers and strength of a brand to command a price premium. Apple is strong on every one of these and that is why their brand is now number one. Apple makes hundreds of dollars on every iPhone sold.
Not long after the iPhone 5S and 5C were released, Apple had already sold over 9 million of them. We can all agree, that's commanding a pretty nice price premium.
