I have been a Mac fan since my parents gave me a Mac 512K when I graduated High School in the mid-80’s. My fascination continued with upgrading until I got to the LC475 . Around 1997, I got introduced to BBEdit , which is marketed with the catch phrase; “ it doesn’t suck ”, and it doesn’t. by Bare Bones Software, which over the years I had come to love and miss (especially when I converted to the religion of the evil empire, Windows (shudder). Like they say, Windows 98 = Mac 86.
When I originally got into web site creation and still had a Mac, I bought BBedit, as the selection for HTML coding on the Mac was not the best. So with BBedit and a guide book on HTML, I was able to successfully teach myself how to code. Over the years I have owned several domains and have developed them into vibrant websites. But alas, when my career path took me away from my beloved deities of Jobs and The Woz to join in the movement of Gates(ism), I had to say good by to my beloved BBedit. I had forgotten about it until the beginning of October when I noticed the name of Barebones Software next to the endodontic office where I was to receive a root canal. Needless to say, seeing that sign made the pain go away.
I got a hold of the newest BBedit (version 10.5.5) and was immediately impressed at the improvements I noticed. They include;
· A cleaner interface
· HTML Tag insertion
o Including tables, frames and forms
· Saving/Copying to an FTP Server
That being said, I downloaded my entire website which you can see by going to www.atyourservicefreelancing.com , and continued my grand creation. I had been using either Sandvox on the Mac or Page Breeze HTML editor on the PC. In looking at the code, I found it was very cluttered and dirty. Well I was about to start going through the code, but instead found that good ol’ BBedit would do it for me. All I had to do is go to MARKUP-à TIDY-à CLEAN DOCUMENT. What a time saver. In less than 1 hour, I had all the bad and excess code cleaned and otherwise deleted. For me to have gone through 10 pages with well over 10,000 lines of code would have taken days if not weeks. Thank you BBedit, my beloved. While it is totally feature rich, that is my favorite feature thus far. It gives you the choice to delete or not to delete code, tags, etc.
Each change you make can either be previewed in BBedit itself or your default browser.
They do offer a free trial at www.barebones.com , but you won’t need it. BBedit should be in every web designers arsenal.
