Two highly popular worlds have merged to allow Google Glass users to have a second screen for Grand Theft Auto right in their face. According to TechCrunch on October 7 , an Android developer named Mike DiGiovanni managed to incorporate Google's wearable tech into the world of “Grand Theft Auto 3,” which was released in 2001.
The reason this isn't being used with a newer version of the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise is that the gaming must be done on a PC. There were issues with getting GTA 4 to work and the most recent version isn’t available on PC, so GTA 3 it was. DiGiovanni built a custom app that will pick up the map that is on the PC screen and will send it to Google Glass via Wi-Fi. The Google device will then display the map on the eyepiece. According to International Business Times , a player could be able to navigate through the world by only looking at the map displayed in the Google eyepiece.
To TechCrunch, DiGiovanni says he intends to release the app. However, he notes that the use of Wi-Fi will drain Google Glass's battery after about an hour of play. It's likely that he will release the app once Google released the official Glass software development kit, in order to release a more polished version of the app.
While it’s great to see an app released out of just the general pursuit of fun, it seems unlikely that the app will have a great amount of staying power. It just seems like a stretch for people to want to revisit a game that came out over ten years ago, especially when a brand new version just came out.
