One of the new stars in home technology is DoorBot .
DoorBot is an interesting concept from BOT Home Automation. It’s a surface mount doorbell that cleverly allows instant video communications to a smartphone or tablet over Wi-Fi. The smartphone and DoorBot do not need to be on the same network.
DoorBot just launched, and isn’t even available yet. The firm launched at a the CEDIA trade event aimed at home theater and home automation dealers, and managed to land a contract with Staples.
Although positioned as a doorbell, it’s really more of a gadget. That is it isn’t likely a competitor to the $20 doorbell, but perhaps an alternative to a $200 Nest thermostat. This is all about the “Internet of Things” and the home is the prime target. Thermostats, smoke detectors, ovens, and even irons are about to get a lot smarter - er well at least connected.
DoorBot initiates a push notification to the smartphone via a free/included cloud service. A two-way visual and audio connection is established. Oh, it can also ring the doorbell. The unit is all contained within a single box including a rechargeable 12 month battery. It can be completely wireless, or with standard doorbell wiring can ring a physical chime.
The DoorBot works with both Android and iOS, and can work with with multiple household devices (for every house member). It’s reasonably well thought-out and sells for $199.
Remember this can be completely wireless, though does require an Internet connection. That means it can be used in different situations than just a door. The firm intends to offer a bundled version with Lockitron which is a device that fits over a deadbolt, and can turn the lock from the mobile app.
The DoorBot was c rowdfunded on ChristieStreet .
It is a very interesting concept worth a look.
