Deep frying a turkey is faster than roasting it in the oven, but there are safety precautions that need to be followed or it could become a very dangerous situation that could lead to a fire and severe burns.
How to Deep Fry a Thanksgiving Turkey
Deep frying a turkey takes approximately four minutes per pound. Prepping the turkey take a bit of work, but when it's all done, it will be worth the time spent preparing your holiday bird. Butterball recommends that you use a turkey that's less than 14 pounds for the best results. It must be fully thawed, so think ahead if you're buying a frozen turkey. Remove the wrapper, neck and giblets from the thawed or fresh turkey. Pat the turkey dry with paper towels. Season the turkey with salt, pepper, your favorite dry marinade or a flavor injector . Once the oil comes to the proper temperature, slowly lower the turkey into the turkey fryer. Don't worry if the turkey isn't completely covered in oil. It will cook thoroughly, although the top of the breast may be lighter than the rest of the turkey. Do not overfill the oil. Cook for approximately four minutes per pound. The dark meat needs to reach an internal temperature of 175 degrees to 180 degrees and the white meat needs to reach internal temperature of between 165 degrees to 170 degrees. When the turkey is done, lift it slowly from the fryer and place in a large foil turkey roasting pan or on paper towels to drain off some of the oil. Let the turkey stand for 20 minutes before carving.
