OK before we move on let’s make this clear—if you open your PS4 before its warranty expires, Sony will void it.
BUT for those who know no fear, have the chops for messing around electronics, and just basically want to open up the machine to see what’s inside to see what can be fixed in the future, popular DIY repair site iFixit.com has done a teardown of Sony’s new PlayStation 4, and the news is good.
The PS4 gets a high 8 out of 10 for ease of repair.
The tear down
In a mere 25 steps, the techno wizards at ifixit.com dismantled the PS4 into its basic parts, and if not for a stubborn heat sink grasping on for dear life to the EMI metal shield, the newest video game console from Sony may have even received a higher score.
Props for no hassle fixes
The folks at ifixit.com were very impressed with the clean assembly of the PS4 and how all the parts lacked any sort of adhesive or glue to anchor components down, which makes disassembly and assembly a snap.
A better fan inside
For PS3 owners, fan noise was a problem, but on the PS4 Sony has done their homework and has installed a brand new unit which not only keeps the innards nice and chilly, it also functions in smart mode and will adjust to the internal temperature of the console by speeding up or slowing down.
Oh, and it’s really quite too.
Motherboard, hard drive, and Blu-ray
The heart of the PS4 is its sleek and compact motherboard. The tech guys at ifixit were able to disassemble the case in no time, and the Blu-ray player, hard drive, and motherboard were removed by loosening some screws.
Replacing the hard drive, however, will not void your warranty. So if you want to install a larger capacity drive, no problem-o.
The disassembly method, for the PS4, was repeated throughout the tear down; remove screws, then remove parts. Easy peasy.
Down the line
For those who want to take on the task of repairing a PS4, it sounds very doable. But of course, you risk losing your warranty if you do so. So YMMV.
