In this episode, I interview Mayank Jain, co-founder and CEO of Splash Math. We discuss how Splash Math creates engaging educational apps for children that have over 4 million downloads. Also, listen to the clever half-baked idea he gave and what it may mean for the future of mobile apps.

Splash Math was created after the founders realized that they did not have the best system in college for uploading assignments and then they started talking with teachers and developing educational software for their college. Through that process they found how about adaptive learning and how students respond to it.

The love of math and the desire to bring the enjoyment of math back into it drove the people behind Splash Math to create an app that would be both engaging and entertaining and would make a lot of children interested in the same math that is usually not so interesting when taught in school.

In this interview we’ll cover the following topics:

  • Why the founders decided to develop educational games for grades 1-5?

  • How to create engaging and educational games.

  • How they develop the math curriculum within the apps.

  • A story of how one child woke up wanting to play a Splash Math app.

  • Mayank discusses the low point of the company when Apple launched an update that resulted in lost of user data.

  • What’s coming up next for Splash Math.
