You're watching YouTube and the phone rings. You grab the mouse to pause the video. That works but there are better, quicker ways. In this article you will learn shortcut keys that will move you through videos with ease. Your YouTube viewing can be vastly improved especially if you use YouTube to do research.
To get the most out of this article start a YouTube video in another browser window. Then try the keys as you read.
To use the following shortcuts the video itself must be 'in focus.' This means you have to click on the video to put the focus on it instead of another location on the page. The best place to click is in the middle below the time bar. Clicking on the video itself puts it in focus but it also toggles between pause and play.
Now you're ready to try the shortcuts.
To toggle between pause and play hit the SPACEBAR. The K key also toggles pause/play. To jump backward or forward a few seconds hit LEFTARROW or RIGHTARROW, respectively. Or hit J or L which does the same as LEFTARROW/RIGHTARROW. To jump to different parts of the movie hit the numbers 1-9. Number 1 jumps 10% in, 2 goes to 20%, and so forth up to 9 which jumps to 90%. To jump to the beginning of the movie hit HOME or the number 0. To jump to the end of the movie hit END.
These shortcuts are unfortunately disabled during YouTube commercials so you can't skip them.
Now that you have mastered YouTube shortcuts you will be able to get around much easier in movies when you need to. And next time the phone rings don't grab the mouse, just hit SPACEBAR.
