A new Roku Streaming Stick vs. Google Chromecast battle is on the way, as Roku recently announced its brand new streaming media device. The small stick will be similar to Google's dongle, but at a slightly higher price, and with more content available inside the device itself. It seems if the latest reports are true, Google will be facing tougher competition from Roku once the device launches.
According to CNET.com in a March 4 report, the new Roku Streaming Stick was announced on Tuesday by the company at a starting price of $50. For that price, users will get all of the content of the Roku streaming media player boxes, and they won't have to stream media to the device on the TV. Instead, it will simply plug into an available HDMI port on an HDTV and it's ready to go. The device also requires plugging a micro USB cable into either a USB port on the HDTV, or into an external power adapter (included), just like the Chromecast does. However, the new Roku stick will have a full on-screen interface with channels and content to select from. That's all built into the device, while the Chromecast lacks such features.
While the Roku stick might be $15 higher, it allows for access to the over 1,200 channels of content offered via the Roku channels. There will also be "push" features where users can cast content from a mobile device using YouTube, Netflix and other apps. Right now, the Chromecast, priced at $35, only allows for limited streaming options from mobile devices, or casting from a Google Chrome web browser tab on a PC, Mac or laptop. The Roku stick will also include a WiFi Direct-based remote control, while the Chromecast does not include one of any kind. The current lineup of Roku's allow for use of a touchscreen app on mobile devices as well.
The new Roku Streaming Stick is set to make its big debut this April at $49.99. Google and Apple will probably be going back to the drawing board soon. Based on the early reports it's already sounding like this new Roku device will have what it takes to give the Chromecast a serious run for its money, as well as the higher-priced Apple TV media box that is on the market.
