So the internet had a milestone a short time ago and celebrated its silver anniversary. This in essence is only a partial truth, as it has been around (as ARPA net) since 1969 when it connected 4 major universities as a backup in case the “normal” communication infrastructure is destroyed or otherwise compromised.
That being said, the 21st century internet is a vast array of information that is both useful and useless at the same time. It can also give the typical layperson a sense of expertise with a little knowledge of a lot. In essence, it can make John and Jane Doe, the Cliff “plethora of useless knowledge” Clavin. One specific example is when the author was stricken with cellulitis due to MRSA. It took him 5 minutes to email, face time or otherwise contact friends advising that he will be in the hospital. It took the authors’ mother, 2 minutes to look up cellulitis and see that it can cause sepsis of the blood which is potentially fatal.
Aside from the Pandora’s box that the internet can constantly open, it is also a tool that decrease productivity in the workplace as well as a time killer for the addictively bored.
Keep in mind, your work probably monitors all internet activity, so the caveat here is be time conscious when looking these sites. If however, you are bored at home with no other responsibilities at the moment (like that would happen), take some time, look and play on some of these great sites.
