On Wednesday, a new Amazon 3D smartphone was announced at the company’s big press event in Seattle. A CNET.com report indicated that the newest mobile device will be exclusive to AT&T for service, at least for the time being. Expectations are that the new device will be another way for the company to drive shoppers to various aspects of their website or their mobile developments such as music, games, apps and movies.


On June 18, ZDNet reported that the new Fire smartphone was unveiled by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Among the key features that were revealed were Firefly, the 3D image perspective, tilt gesture controls, and the fact that the phone is fully integrated into the various Amazon Prime member features. As of this report, a price of $199 for a 32GB model and $299 for the 64GB version.


The new phone features a 4.7-inch IPS LCD HD display with Gorilla Glass 3 and a rubber frame which is scratch-resistant. Specs include a 2.2 GHZ quad-core processor, 2GB RAM memory, an an Adreno 330 graphics processor. A 13 megapixel rear-facing camera with physical shutter button, optical image stabilization and a low-light photo sensor among the exclusive features. Other key features include Dolby Digital Plus with dual stereo speakers and virtual surround sound.


Amazon Prime will allow for unlimited photo storage online from the phone. With Prime music, members will get access to over a million songs to download or stream for free with their membership. Mayday, the 24/7 online help service that Amazon has on their Kindle Fire HDX, will be available on the phone for 365 years a day.


Firefly was the first big reveal for the new smartphone that Bezos introduced. It’s a visual recognition program that can see objects, QR codes, bar codes and other items. Firefly, which has a dedicated button on the phone, includes Music ID which helps to recognize music, movies and TV shows. In addition, it can recognize artwork to pull up information about it from sites such as Wikipedia, or scan text to recognize it, or even a phone number to call it.


The next development for Amazon's new smartphone that was revealed to "wow" customers was its 3D feature. Bezos showed lock-screen wallpapers that change as you move the phone perspective, and also demonstrated the feature used on a special map application. An example was shown of the Empire State Building from a 3D perspective on the map. Tilting the phone can do various tasks such as zooming on an image, or auto-scrolling on the web, through map addresses.


Amazon released new iterations of their popular Kindle Fire tablets in color and hi-definition over the past several years, and then their first set-top box, the Amazon Fire TV, in 2014. The devices integrate with Amazon accounts, as well as Prime member features such as free movies, eBooks, music and apps from the website.
