Many pilots from the Southwest know the beautiful Catalina off the Los Angeles coast. Most of them just flew to the Catalina airport on the top of the hill above the city of Avalon.
An interesting alternative is - however - die possibility to reach the island by a ship. Several companies - such as Catalina Express - offer funny rides from several Southern California ports such as Sn Pedro, the official harbor of Los Angeles.
The Catalina island was formerly owned by the chewing gum inventor Wrigley. When his property taxes started to be unaffordable - even to him - he decided to turn the property to the State of California.
