In Windows 8 and later Windows Explorer has been renamed File Explorer.

Windows Explorer has existed since the first versions of Windows, that graphical O/S that replaced DOS and has been around now for over 25 years. Windows Explorer is the main way to find files on your Windows PC. This article shows you how to navigate Windows Explorer without using your mouse.

When looking for a particular file it is easier to use your keyboard than to use your mouse. It takes a little bit of practice but within a few minutes you will be able to navigate much quicker when using the arrow keys on your keyboard. You can try these steps as you read this article. Open Windows Explorer in a separate window and do the steps as you read.

To start, place your mouse over a folder on the left hand side of Windows Explorer. Try the Documents folder, for example. Once the chosen folder is selected (it will have a highlighted background) try pressing the right arrow on your keyboard. that will expand the highlighted folder. Pressing the left arrow will contract the folder. Once the folder list is expanded hit the down arrow to move down in the folder list.

Notice that when a folder is already expanded hitting the right arrow moves the selection down one level into the subfolder list. Notice also that every time you hit the left arrow, either the selection moves up one level or the current folder is contracted.

There are lots of ways to use your keyboard instead of your mouse but they are not as obvious. However this author has many PC tip articles that will help you.
