Gangnam Style, the 18th pop single by the Korean Psy, has not only been very popular, it has another unprecedented record. It was the first video to break YouTube's view counter. YouTube has acknowledged this feat by adding a pop-up to the video's page in December last year (see image in this article).
YouTube shows how many views each video has on its website. This view counter was originally set up with a 32-bit integer value which will hold up to 2,147,483,647 (over two billion) counts. They thought that number would never be exceeded. But Psy's blockbuster video has now had over 2.2 billion views.
"Gangnam Style" is a made-up phrase that refers to the Gangnam district of Seoul. The song and accompanying video went viral in August 2012 and has been so popular that it has made its own unexpected record on YouTube.
YouTube has now updated its website to handle larger numbers and shouldn't "break" again unless another video exceeds 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 views. That is 9.2 quintillion views - a video would have to exceed 2,147,483,647 views 4,294,967,298 times to exceed that number! It looks like YouTube is safe for a while now.
