Epson is known for its printing and scanning, not to mention professional quality for both. They have now stepped it up by stepping it down. Enter the DS-40 portable WiFi Scanner.

One of its strongest points is that it lets you scan without a computer. You can scan directly to your smart phone or tablet. Once on your mobile device, you can work with it as if you were on a home computer or laptop. This includes emailing or faxing it, sending it to the cloud service of your choice and even edit it with the software from each respective app store.

Sure, there other scanners that can do this, but not with the resolution, or a price point under $130.

It is larger than some portable scanners with dimensions of 1.7 by 11.7 by 2.8 inches but totally small and light enough to carry easily. It also comes with its own carrying case for protection.

Basic setup varies, but is very simple. With the flick of a switch, you can go from USB to WiFi. One thing to note is that the USB cable will power it, so battery use is conserved.

To scan to a phone or tablet, you first need to download Epson's scan app to the device and install the supplied set of four AA batteries (included) in the scanner.

You can then set the slide switch toWi-Fi access point mode, follow the instructions to connect by Wi-Fi, and calibrate the scanner using the app and calibration tool.

If you want to use it both ways, you need to both install the software on your PC/Mac and install the app on your phone or tablet.

If you set the switch to Wi-Fi, you also have the choice of connecting the scanner to your network for a single feed scanner. I am putting that out there as a feature, although not many people will try that.

For testing, it was tested with 3 devices;

Mac Book Air running Yosemite iPod 5 running iOS 8 Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 running Kit Kat

Scanning to a mobile device is simple. Put the first page far enough into the front slot for the feed mechanism to grab it, and then press the Scan button on the DS-40 or give the Scan command from the app. When the page finishes, the app will show you the image and let you zoom in to see it in more detail. You can then either choose Done, or put another page in the front slot and choose Scan More.

Scanning to a computer is like any other Epson device. Either way you choose, is fast, precise and simply easy.

Business card scanning is another way that this little scanner comes in handy. You will need additional software, which is easily downloadable. After that, the scans are clear and concise. One caveat though, is that during testing, business card scanning was not doable via WiFi. This may be a software limitation or user error. The USB scanning was fast; less than 5 seconds per card.

All in all, this is portable perfection and is useful on the road, in the house, on a plane, etc. Learn more at www.epson.com .
