Did you know you can connect your iPhone to your HDTV and watch Netflix or Crackle on your big screen? It's actually rather easy to accomplish, though you will need some additional equipment to get it to work. We'll go over a few different options for connecting your iPhone to your HDTV.
1. Apple Digital AV Adapter
This is the best way to make a direct connection between your iPhone and your TV. The Apple Digital AV Adapter hooks into the iPhone's 30-pin or Lightning connector and allows you to plug in an HDMI cable, which provides the best quality audio and video. The adapter also has a USB port that can be used to plug in your iPhone and keep it charging.
You have two options for the Digital AV Adapter: (1) You can buy the Lightning adapter that is compatible with the iPhone 5, iPad 4 and iPad Mini or (2) You can buy the old adapter that is is compatible with older iPhone and iPad models. They both cost around $40.
In addition to the adapter, you will also need an HDMI cable.
2. Composite/Component Cables
The HDMI route is ideal, but if you have an older TV, you can also connect using composite or component cables. Composite cables will give you the best visual clarity, but component cables will work with most television sets. You can buy the composite cables for $34 or buy the component cables for $25.
3. Apple TV
This is my favorite option. Apple TV is the most expensive solution, but it gives you the additional abilities of Apple TV, which supports movie rentals from iTunes and various video apps like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu Plus . And while Apple TV hooks in via an HDMI cable, you can connect your iPad to your HDTV wirelessly by using AirPlay to communicate with Apple TV.
You can buy Apple TV for $99.
