On July 1, 2010 HP released its first tablet aimed at the general electronics consumer: the TouchPad . It ran HP’s proprietary operating system WebOS. But due to extremely poor sales numbers, on August 18, 2010, HP announced that it would discontinue manufacturing the tablet.
But according to a report from ReadWrite.com yesterday, inside sources indicate that HP will try the tablet business once again, but this time with an Android operating system.
A few details
The sources said HP will be launching a high-end tablet, which will be powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 4 chip. In comparison, Google’s Nexus 7 tablet runs Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor.
What has some industry watchers concerned is that the new HP tablet will be “high-end.” If true, this may mean HP is on the road to another tablet disaster because of misreading the public’s wants and needs.
The failed HP TouchPad missed the mark by providing an advanced operating system that the public was not interested in. If the “high-end” tablet from HP materializes, it may again misread the public by offering a tablet that is too expensive.
Microsoft’s Surface Pro is already showing signs of sales weakness due to its entry-level price tag of $899.
Getting it right
HP has a long history of producing capable, if not lackluster, computer products. If Hewlett-Packard hopes to see a glimmer of hope in competing with the likes of tablet giants such as Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung, it will have to seriously consider a fresh new way of designing its tablet in order to set it apart from the others.
