As Valentine's Day approaches, supersized six-foot roses are in great demand in the U.S, reported the USA Today on Feb. 11, 2013.
The six-foot roses were ready just in time for Valentine's Day. This flower bred on steroids gets so big from special breeding and soils.
Several companies such as The Ultimate Rose, FTD and FiftyFlowers.com are involved in development and the sales are soaring as florists are promoting the gargantuan flowers that also come in three-foot, four-foot and five-foot varieties.
According to their figures, FTD which has been selling these flowers for four years, had a 50% growth over last year. Some consumers want to make a big impresssion by sending the roses that are taller than them.
The roses also have almost twice as many petals. FTD says that they have sold out of the five-foot rose variety and have placed orders for more.
The roses are grown about 10,000 feet above sea level in Ecuador and left on the stem for 16 weeks, instead of the typical eight.
The five-foot variety rose of dozen and a vase costs nearly $300 through FTD. FiftyFlowers.com sells the six-foot ones in bulk: 96 for $600.
