If I were to re-do my college experience , I would definitely get a degree from home. In this post I will help you understand the two reasons why you might an enjoy an online education more than a traditional brick and mortar one.
Why would I have gotten an online degree instead?
1. My degree felt like an online degree
This may not be the case for every traditional brick and mortar school, but my university used a program called Canvas to keep students updated on their homework, grades, and etc.
Some teachers would put their power point lectures there and we could access them from wherever. I found out quickly that I didn't even need to attend class. I mean, why would I? As long as I had the book and I checked Canvas, I was good.
This method didn't work for every class I enrolled in. Some teachers would require attendance and would enforce it by making it part of your grade. Bummer, I know!
2. Flexibility
Do you enjoy flexibility? I love to travel and going to school didn't always allow me to travel as much as I wanted. With an online degree, you can study and travel at the same time. Just don't forget to pack your laptop, books, and charger.
Many students like the online flexibility especially if they have a families that need attention. Disabilities can often make traveling to and from school and from the car to the classrooms quite difficult.
3. Complete your degree much faster
Want to finish your degree in less time? Let's face it, a lot of people go to traditional brick and mortar schools to socialize, make friends, and find a spouse. This is something you can't exactly get while online.
I found the social life often interfered with my studies. Friends were always wanting to do this and do that with them, taking me away from my school priorities. The advantage of getting the degree online is that you can get the degree without having to deal with these distractions.
I will admit that studying from home brings other distractions. Some of these include, television, food, games, and family related distractions. Students who do well in online education tend to be more disciplined and organized.
Having said that, most students actually complete their degrees in about 20 to 30% less time than a traditional brick and mortar student. That equates to knocking off a year, when compared to a typical 4 year degree.
Conclusion
If you crave flexibility and want to slash a year or more off your education, then you might enjoy an online education more than a traditional brick and mortar education.
