In the pursuit of justice for gang rape victim Rehtaeh Parsons, Anonymous threatens to expose those who drove the 17-year-old girl to suicide after they gang raped her and circulated photos of their crime via social media.
On Wednesday, April 10, hacktivists associated with the international collective known as Anonymous released a statement indicating that they had ascertained the identities of the accused rapists and will release that information to the public if the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) fails to take "immediate legal action against the individuals in question."
Seventeen months ago , young Canadian Rehtaeh Parsons was gang raped. The rape was photographed and the photos were shared via social media. Understandably, Rehtaeh was devastated. She was called a slut. She was bullied. She faced depression. And in a final, desperate call for help, she took her own life.
Police claim they investigated the alleged gang rape, but failed to press charges against the alleged rapists due to insufficient evidence. Critics claim the authorities failed in their duty to serve and protect, failed in their duty to properly investigate the crime, and ultimately failed Rehtaeh Parsons.
The following is an excerpt from the statement released by Anonymous:
Anonymous has confirmed the identities of two of the four alleged rapists. We are currently confirming a third and it is only a matter of time before the fourth is identified as well.
Our demands are simple: We want the N.S. RCMP to take immediate legal action against the individuals in question. We encourage you to act fast. If we were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them.
We do not approve of vigilante justice as the media claims. That would mean we approve of violent actions against these rapists at the hands of an unruly mob. What we want is justice. And That's your job. So do it.
The names of the rapists will be kept until it is apparent you have no intention of providing justice to Retaeh's family. Please be aware that there are other groups of Anons also attempting to uncover this information and they may not to wish to wait at all. Better act fast.
That is all

In addition to exposing the young woman's rapists and tormentors, Anonymous is also threatening large demonstrations outside of the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Halifax, near where Rehtaeh lived, if immediate action is not taken.
There is an online petition, “ Justice for Rehtaeh: Demand an independent inquiry into the police investigation ” supporters of Rehtaeh can sign.
