The celebrity hackers who have doxxed numerous celebrities have taken credit for the recent string of high-profile swatting pranks in Hollywood. The most recent one of significant note was the one that hit Diddy's house on Wednesday.
Doxxing is the act of revealing the personal information of people on the Internet, generally including their name, address, phone number(s), social security number, passwords, and other financial information. Swatting, on the other hand, involves calling 911 and falsely reporting an emergency that will cause SWAT teams to rush to a home.
The hackers updated their website on Thursday, with new notes inserted that take credit for the Diddy prank as well as the swatting that targeted Paris Hilton in March. Their number of celebrity victims listed on their site, which re-emerged Wednesday after a brief break, is now at 45, with George Clooney and Tyra Banks added.
While those two are the only ones publicly acknowledged as swattings, according to sources close to the investigation, the hackers have privately taken credit for every swatting that has taken place since early February, when authorities alleged the "original" swatter was a 12-year-old boy from California.
Included among the privately bragged list of those swatted are Chris Brown, Tom Cruise, Kim Kardashian, and even the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The FBI has been investigating the hackers from the beginning, if for no other reason than the fact that FBI director Robert Mueller is among the doxxed, along with Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Marshals Director Stacia Hylton.
