This morning, as far as the eye can see, Facebook has turned red. Profile pictures have been replaced with red icons that represent marriage equality. The case for marriage equality arrives at the Supreme Court today.
Opponents against same sex marriage will argue that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. That religion teaches this is the only true marriage, and the only marriage that should be legal. That sentiment has resulted in gay marriage bans in 38 states.
The same Constitution that keeps the government from meddling in the way church defines a marriage also keeps the church from using the government to enforce their beliefs. In other words the church can scream as loud as it wants to, but it’s impotent to take any actions legally.
Same-sex marriage supporters argue that they the Constitutional right to marry. The Constitution does guarantee all citizens equal rights, but same sex marriage is not exactly viewed as the only way to get those rights. Even if the Supreme Court decides for same-sex marriage individual states could still choose to opt out.
The demonstrations on Facebook started on Monday evening with a united front as a majority of profiles changed to red icons one at a time as the evening proceeded. Quotes from Victor Hugo and many others appeared across the pages being shared over and over again.
Good luck marriage equality.
