So why was E! News hacked? Apparently the E! News Twitter account had someone hack into it and post a news story about Justin Bieber being gay.
A report from UPI.com on May 5 said that the @eonline Twitter account currently has over 5 million followers. Among the recent messages shown on their Twitter feed were one reporting that singer Justin Bieber is gay. The site goes on to mention that several other prominent news accounts, including CBS' accounts for "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours" were both hacked in the past several months.
E! said in a statement regarding the incident on Saturday:
"E online's breaking news Twitter and SMS accounts were compromised today. We're working to have this resolved as quickly as possible and are fully investigating the incident. We apologize for any confusion that the erroneous news alerts may have caused."
There have been plenty of online viral hoaxes perpetrated using Twitter and Facebook to report fake news stories before, including fake celebrity death news. Among the celebrities who have been used in hoaxes are Justin Bieber, Bill Cosby, Adam Sandler and rapper Eminem.
Just about 23 hours ago, E! News tweeted on their account:
This account @eonline was compromised and some incorrect information was sent out. We're working with Twitter now to fix this.
The E! News Twitter was reportedly suspended following the hacking incident, but appears to be working now.
