Is Hotmail officially dead as the latest headlines suggest? It appears so, as the latest reports are indicating that Microsoft has officially migrated all of their Hotmail accounts over to the Outlook.com service for email.
A report on May 2 from SF Gate says that the Hotmail e-mail addresses will remain the same ( yourname@hotmail.com ), but the interface will now go through Outlook.com, "Microsoft's newer and redesigned email experience." The new interface will include at least a few early features that users can start using right away too.
One of these is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), which is a device-friendly way to send and receive e-mails. The other feature is deeper integration with the SkyDrive online service. SkyDrive is Microsoft's cloud storage system, where multiple file formats can be stored and easily sent to others from the web.
"HoTMaiL" was a service that originally launched back in 1996, but was acquired just a year later by Microsoft for nearly $400 million. Microsoft rebranded it as "MSN Hotmail" and it became one of the standard free email services online, along with Yahoo!, AOL, and Gmail. The service featured unlimited storage, and was also one of the largest web-based chat services online as of 2012.
