It was reported in May 13, 2013, that a 2,300-year-old Mayan temple was bulldozed and destroyed to extract crushed rock for a road-building project by a construction company in Belize.
The largest pyramid in Belize was said to be on a private land but under government protection.
The Police are investigating into the incident and charges might be filed against the construction company which bulldozed the temple.
Jaime Awe, head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology said, ''It’s a feeling of Incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity ... they were using this for road fill, It’s like being punched in the stomach, it’s just so horrendous.''
There are around 80 buildings in the surrounding areas all on the private property, but only the Mayan temple was destroyed.
Robert Rosenswig, an archaeologist at the State University of New York at Albany said, "The one advantage of this massive destruction, to the core site, is that the remains of early domestic activity are now visible on the surface."
What do you think? Should the temple be constructed again? What action must be taken against the construction company?
