I had always wondered what swimmers did when they get into the water. With nothing but water all around, it seemed like a very lonely place to be. Now, don't get me wrong; its great to be a swimmer and if you are in the ranks of Michael Phelps, I bow to you. However despite swimming in the big leagues, you have to admit that it is still a lonely place down there when all you hear is the rush of water against your body. However, a few weeks ago, I came across something that changed my perception of the sport, at least when it comes to music.
Believe it or not, there are waterproof headphones called swimbuds. They work with, you guessed it, an underwater, waterproof iPod Shuffle. I have no idea how this innovation passed me by but somehow it did, until now. Music has always been an effective way to get work done especially when you work alone. Since swimmers generally "work" alone, having music accompaniment is a great way to get them to both enjoy the sport and work out longer.
Swimbuds come in different bundles as well, giving you the freedom of selecting what works best for you. There are short headphones and swimbuds that cut out the hassle of having to wrap long cords around the neck (quite risky when swimming) and they come with sets of interchangeable earbuds which give you a custom fit. Caution however is given to avoid using them when you have to dive or go below 10 feet.
The idea of a waterproof iPod Shuffle is also quite interesting. Think of the numerous ways that these can come in handy. They are not only for swimmers, but I would love to take them out for a run on a rainy day, or even, in the shower. As if this is not enough, the iPod Shuffle comes with Voice Over which allows you to navigate your playlist while keeping your hands "on the water." I can think of a million ways where this would be useful and convenient, but I leave the imagination to you.
If you love water dancing or you are always in you swimsuit, you definitely need to check out these gadgets. On the other hand, if you love music but dislike swimming or other related water sport, you now have a reason to jump into the water without having to turn OFF your music. For me, I say it’s a win win for both music and water lovers.
