The Yahoo! news reported on July 07, 2013, that Universal's animated movie "Despicable Me 2" opened beyond expectations earning $142.1 million at domestic level over the five-day weekend.


Starring Steve Carell as the protagonist and an army of little yellow minions, the movie was expected to gross around $100 million.


The original movie came in 2010, had an opening of $56.4 million. The film's worldwide gross is currently around the $300 million mark while Disney and Pixar's "Monsters University" is at $400 million.


Among animated movies with highest opening, "Shrek The Third" is in first position with $121.6 million, "Toy Story 3" is second with $110.3 million and "Shrek 2" is third with $108 million.


"Despicable Me 2" stood fourth with $82.5 million and "Monsters University" came fifth with $82.4 million. Among the Independence Day weekends, "Despicable Me 2" which cost around $76 million, came third behind "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "Spider-Man 2".


The film's excellent marketing campaign has got people excited for the

film. Universal used the appeal of yellow minions in teasers for the

movie, commercials and as toys in McDonalds' Happy Meals. With such a

success, another sequel is already in the works.
