The next time you walk into an Apple Store, you may be surprised to find out that your old iPhone may be eligible for a trade in for a newer iPhone; at least that’s the hot rumor from several sources today.
Unnamed sources
Bloomberg quoted several anonymous sources that said Apple was working with a recycling company named Brightstar to handle the influx of iPhone trade ins, which would then be refurbished by Apple and then resold on the open market—most likely to emerging markets around the world.
9to5 Mac says some Apple Stores are already doing test runs for the new trade-in policy. Other blogs indicate that Apple is in the midst of training their Apple Store reps on the ins and outs of taking trade ins.
Gift card anyone?
According to reports, those who trade in their iPhone 4s, iPhone 4Ss, and iPhone 5s will receive a gift card or credit that would allow them to use it against the purchase price of the next iPhone model.
There has been confusion in the press, however, as to which iPhone will be launched. Some report that it will be the iPhone 5S, while others believe it will be called the iPhone 6. But whatever the outcome, the undisclosed sources all agree that the trade in policy is real.
The expected launch for the next iPhone is slated on or around September 10.
