Early Saturday morning, administrators of the pro-veteran " Americas Misguided Children " Facebook page received a notice that a picture of a young black man wanted in the beating death of 88-year-old Delbert Belton , an Army veteran who was wounded at the Battle of Okinawa in World War II, was removed from the page.
According to Facebook, the picture, which showed the young man's face, violated community standards. The page was also given the option of unpublishing itself to conduct a clean-up. Administrators declined the offer.
The page is a replacement of the extremely popular " Uncle Sam's Misguided Children " that was unpublished under questionable circumstances in July.
About five hours later, page administrators received a threat from a user believed to be a Democratic Party activist from the East Coast who follows Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook.
"We celebrated when USMC was gone, and there is no way we are going to let you sneak past the community standards of Facebook so u can continue to spread your hate," the message said. "I am documenting all the proof for Facebook to look.over to see who u people really are and that u are the same people they banned not long ago. (sic)"
"I will rally our supporters to also collect the evidence and the truth that you are lying to Facebook and trying to start a new account under a new different name," the message added, in what sounded like an attempt at extortion.
When the original page was torn down, owner Rick Ferran told Examiner he suspected it was part of a coordinated attack by liberal "trolls," people who like a page in order to file false or misleading reports in order to get it shut down.
Administrators of other Facebook pages that have been unpublished have said the same thing.
A social media expert familiar with the situation told Examiner that scenario was quite possible.
It is also possible the picture was removed as a result of a coordinated attack led by the person who threatened the page administrators.
We contacted Facebook to determine why a picture of a man wanted in Belton's murder violates community standards, but did not receive a response.
Ironically, Facebook's action comes just one day after telling The Blaze it not only supports freedom of speech but enforces its standards uniformly across the board.
“We review every piece of content that is reported to us or flagged in the system and each one is held to the same exact standard – as is every person who uses our service and we will enforce our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities equally," a Facebook spokesperson said.
But many say Facebook is anything but fair in enforcing its policies. Over 28,000 have signed up to participate in a " Facebook Blackout " event on Aug. 25 to protest Facebook's actions.
On Friday, a candlelight vigil was held to honor Belton, who was beaten to death by two black youths. One suspect is in custody, and the other remains at large.
