Although a number of electronics giants have been rumored to be working on a smartphone, Samsung stands alone as the sole manufacturer to confirm it . As reported on Tuesday , the company has filed for a U.S. trademark for "Samsung Galaxy Gear," and the details of the filing point straight to wearable computing.

The filing describes such "Gear" as follow:

Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.

Of course, Samsung likes to put the Galaxy moniker on just about anything (think Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Grand Quattro, Galaxy Rush, and on and on). A trademark filing does not necessarily mean anything will reach retail, either.

However, Samsung has confirmed it's working on a smartwatch, so this is as good a bet as any. The company has also filed for the trademark Samsung Gear in South Korea.

Not only is Samsung known to be working on a smartwatch, rumors of an iWatch have been rampant for months. Other rumors have pointed to Microsoft and even Google creating their own smartwatches.

There is speculation that -- in addition to the Galaxy Note 3 -- Samsung will unveil its smartwatch at IFA 2013 in Berlin on Sept. 4 or 5.
