The Palestinian researcher who lost out on the reward offered by Facebook’s white hat program is receiving a big pay day from the internet. According to PC Mag , Khalil Shreateh, who is unemployed, will be receiving at least $10,000 after the peoples of the internet showed their support through aGoFundMe campaign.
On Monday, it was reported that over the weekend that Shreateh had found a bug in Facebook’s security and had tried twice to alert Facebook’s developers. When his second message was met with, “Sorry this is not a bug,” he turned to demonstrating the bug, by posting directly to Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook wall. While this certainly captured the engineers’ attention, it also violated the terms of service, which disqualified him from being able to receive the $500 reward for reporting a bug.
To rally around the researcher, BeyondTrust CTO Marc Maiffret put in $2,000 into a GoFundMe campaign. The total now stands at over $10,000.
In a blog post , Maiffret noted that he hopes the community will remember how important independent researchers are. He continued, “I equally hope it has reminded other researchers that while working with technology companies can sometimes be frustrating, we can never forget the greater goal; to help the Internet community at large, just as that community has helped donate over ten thousand dollars to Khalil within a day."
