Mark Zuckerberg wants everyone to get online, absolutely everybody. According to Bloomberg on Aug. 21, Zuckerberg has formed a group with other tech companies to help expand internet access out the the 5 billion people who don't have it.
He's calling his group Internet.org (now someone really wishes they had bought that URL). The group is made up of Samsung, Nokia and Qualcomm, as well as several others. According to Zuckerberg's statement, "Everything Facebook has done has been about giving all people around the world the power to connect. There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges.”
But maybe what he's really saying is that all of these people are people who could potentially be on Facebook. Always got the dollar on the brain, eh, Zuck.
However, his cause really is a noble one. He noted that granting internet access to the rest of the world will allow the world to make more informed decisions about government, etc as well as allow all voices to be heard. In order to carry out its goal, Internet.org will be working to make the internet and smartphones more affordable, make data use more efficient and to support new business models in places where internet access is limited, according to Politico .
