You have seen a lot of Gerber Gear products on this column. While the products are known across the board for survival and tactical uses. This column has found ways to incorporate them into the technology realm.
These next two products are no different. The two newest arrivals from Gerber are;
While Gerber gear, whether it be tools, knives or lights, are synonymous with survival and wilderness use, they can also be synonymous with every day life. These aforementioned products are just that.
First, is the far from ordinary, impromptu pen. It is a pen that is also a safety tool that also has security and self-defense qualities to it. The writing, safety and self defense aspects are what Gerber advertises, the last one is an opinion.
The pen itself is a heavy piece of futuristic artwork. It incorporates a pressurized ink cartridge that will write in any environment and any position. That means upside down in the pouring rain. That also means when you take that $1,000,000 ride into orbit for your honeymoon in 2150. In-fact, it was tested by pairing it with the “Rite in the Rain All Weather Notebook”, which came in an earlier reviewed Gerber Product; The Gerber Go Bag . It does advertise “rite in the rain”, but will it “rite” right under water ? After filling up the basin, it was put to the test. YES, it “rites” perfectly right and legible under water. It also has tempered steel tip which is perfect for shattering windows and/or fending off a would-be attacker. In testing, that same glass shattering tempered tip was found to be extremely useful as an “etcher”. The etching appeared to work on metal, glass, wood and plastic. This is the only pen you will want to carry.
As for the BG Hands Free torch, Gerber says “When solving problems in the wild you need three things - your head, your hands and your tools.” That is also true in real life. Day to day, as a technician, a mechanic or other professional that works with his/her hands, proper lighting and vision is clutch, as not all environments are perfectly lit for what you need to do. If you are one of those that have the least amount of ambidextrous ability, such as a certain writer, you need all the hands you can get. You have been provided with two by nature. This torch allows you to use both. The light is multi-directional and has two brightness adjustments. Whether you are under a desk, under a car or under a tree stump, this will light the way.
A third item was received (as an honorable mention here) is the Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade Knife with fire starter tool. It (in its sheath) has all you might just need. It has an integrated sharpener, which works well on other knives too. It has a fire starter tool second to none. Whether you are just starting a back yard fire pit or trying to warm up and/or dry off in the wilderness, it starts the necessary fire for you. Lastly, and this is pure safety, it comes with a whistle louder than you have ever heard. It is attached to the lanyard in the handle. Speaking of the handle, it is tough enough to double as a hammer as well.
As always, Gerber never fails to satisfy and surprise. Learn more at www.gerbergear.com .
