When this Internet Deals Examiner received an email about a free $50 Amazon gift card from Nextdoor a mere two hours ago, at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, September 28, 2013, I looked at it with trepidation and quite the side eye, as I often do claims like these.

The Nextdoor website was familiar to me, because it was an app I'd downloaded on my phone after watching a segment of 20/20 or some news magazine TV show about neighborhoods and hidden video cameras.
I feel even better about signing up once I realize you can hide your full address by visiting your Nextdoor profile and clicking "hide full address" to only have your street name display.
"Hello!" exclaimed the email, telling me that some woman I'd never heard of thought I was a great person to start a Nextdoor website for my neighborhood.
"As a thanks, we'll send you a $50 Amazon Gift Card when you launch your website," it promised.
Is Nextdoor real or a scam?
Turns out I had to Google this thing for more information before proceeding. Sure as shootin' folks were pitching their hopes to get their own $50 Amazon gift cards in September 2013 (I guess in August 2013 Nextdoor gave away $50 Starbucks gift cards) by clicking on referral links to Nextdoor to sign up and then inviting others.
Signing up to see if your home applies
After I clicked the referral link, they thanked me for accepting the invitation and told me how easy it was to get started building a better neighborhood with Nextdoor. If you successfully launch a new neighborhood, we'll send you a $50 Amazon Gift Card, they again promised.
But first, I had to start by seeing if my neighborhood qualified by entering my email address, street address, city, state and zip code.
"Good news! We found your address," it proclaimed next to a Google Maps view of my area.
Next I was able to sign up for my free Nextdoor account by entering my name, gender and email address.
"Great! The next step is to verify your address," it said, and I chose to verify my address via my mobile phone.
They called my cell phone number, and instructed me to please answer the phone and enter the two-digit code on your phone keypad. After doing so, I received the news that my account is now verified.
So when do we get our $50 Amazon gift cards?
Now here's the sticky wicket, as they say.
"To launch a neighborhood, you just need to create your Nextdoor website and sign up 10 neighbors. Once your neighborhood launches, you'll get a $50 Amazon Gift Card," Nextdoor claims.
Turns out the woman who sent me the invite lived all the way in Colorado. And I've kept my profit private, so it's probably not as large of a privacy concern as I thought.
Here's hoping we all get our 10 neighbor invites as required within the required time frame (which may be 21 days) and our $50 Amazon gift cards soon thereafter. Looks like a few interesting posts going on in my neighborhood, from what I've perused.
