Google wants to improve your health, according to a Google+ announcement made by Google's CEO Larry Page today. To do this, Google has said they have created a new company called Calico.
The company will be run by the chairman of Apple's board, Art Levinson, and will look to address extending human life and wellness. In his statement Page noted that though this side venture is extremely different from the core of what Google does, " there's tremendous potential for technology to more generally improve people's lives."
However, not much more information was provided. In the press release , Page did discuss that their motivation is to tackle the illnesses and general issues that come along with general aging, such failing mental agility and decreased mobility.
There's no indication what research will take place or what areas they're looking into yet. Though, to TIME , Page said the company wants to look at health issues that really need addressing, so that in 10 to 20 years, those problems will be solved. As in many industries, in health care it can take time for changes to take hold.
In their deep look at Google and it’s new company, TIME also speculates that Calico will use it’s power of data processing and compiling to make new discoveries about well-known, age-related issues.
Who knows? Perhaps the company could even create a universal system for inputting and storing patient data. With all the technology at Google’s hands, a new step into the health industry could be a great success for all those involved.
What issues would you like to see Calico take up? Should they branch out from just the illnesses of the elderly?
