Today Google announced their newest dessert-themed operating system would be called KitKat. Though many people have been waiting on Android 5.0, KitKat will actually be Android 4.4.
On Sept 3., The Verge reported that internally the OS has been called Key Lime Pie. However, when Android learned that apparently very few people knew the taste of key lime pie, they were given the suggestion to name it after a favorite snack of Android coders. The BBC confirmed that no money was exchanged in the deal Android struck with Nestle in order to be able to name their OS after the chocolate bar.
As part of this deal, the BBC notes that even though no money was exchanged, Android and Nestle are now connected and will face any fallout that should come from one or the other suffering in the reputation department.
With the announcement, Google also said, "It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody," which could be hinting at their desire/intent to use the OS in multiple devices other than phones, such as smartwatches, laptops and gaming consoles.
Perhaps in an attempt to rival Apple’s confirmation of their Sept. 10 event today, Andorid also announced that more than 1 billion Android devices have been activated up to this point.
