Tango Down: Anonymous disables the National Security Agency's website via a distributed denial of service attack.
Multiple reports verify that the NSA website went offline Friday afternoon for several hours. Hacktivists associated with the international internet collective known as Anonymous have taken responsibility for the attack.
The Wall Street Journal reports the Twitter account for @anoymousAsia claimed credit for the attack: “We sail strong. #tangodown #nsa,” the group tweeted.
Fox News reports a tweet from the handle @AnonyOps read, “Aww don’t panic about nsa.gov being down. They have a backup copy of the internet.”
Others speculate that Rustle League , a mysterious association of hacktivists closely related to the Anonymous collective, may be responsible for the attack, and the Rustle League crew has released a curious statement via Pastebin claiming responsibility for the attack.
An NSA spokesperson told ABC News the agency’s internal network was “not at all” compromised and no classified information was in danger. The NSA spokesperson declined to comment on what may have brought down the website, citing an ongoing probe.
Last June, Anonymous disabled the National Security Agency’s website and trolled their “impressive surveillance apparatus” with “keywords of terror” as part of Operation Troll the NSA ( #OpTrollTheNSA ).
