Apple sent out e-invitations to major news and media outlets today saying it had something important to announce in San Francisco on October 22, next Tuesday. It also said cryptically that “...we have a lot to cover.”

Most industry watchers agree that the “big” announcement will be about refreshes of the iPad and iPad-mini.

Promises, promises

Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that Apple will produce new products that will wow and amaze the public, but so far his promises have rung somewhat hollow.

Although minor upgrades is business as usual for other companies that can get away with constantly refreshing the same models year after year, this is not so with Apple because the public and the late Steve Jobs set a standard much higher for merchandise releases at Apple.

But in saying this, the announcement by Apple next week should have no surprises as the iPad will probably get a minor refresh in screen resolution, and an increase in CPU performance.

The iPad mini is expected to get an upgraded Retina display plus the perfunctory faster processor.

Fingerprint technology

Most eyes and ears also expect a big show related to incorporating Apple’s new fingerprint ID technology into the new iPads. The new iPhone 5S was the first iPhone to incorporate this feature, but the tech hasn’t generated as much interest as expected.

Surely, Apple is trying to get the wow factor back into the company, but it may take a lot more to get people outside of its established fan base, and investors for that matter, really excited about its products again.

New colors?

One guess as to where else Apple may be going with its press event next Tuesday is the possible introduction of new iPad colors or new iPad covers as new “features” for the devices.

While this may seem trivial, and it probably is, a move like this by Apple only solidifies, in some people’s minds, that the company has basically run out of ideas for innovation and is now in window dressing mode.
