Visitors to the Dallas Zoo this weekend were witness to something gruesome.

In front of all the families and kids who were at the zoo to have fun filled weekend, a male lion bit a lioness to death.

According to a Reuters report on Nov 19, stunned visitors could do nothing but look on.

A rare incident by any count, the killing of the lioness by a male lion has come as a surprise to everyone, including the zoo authorities.

The authorities have now launched an investigation to find out why such an incident took place.

Johari, the lioness, was only five years old and met with a surprising end.

The lion was also acting normal just before the attack and did not show any signs of abnormal behaviour, said the report.

Following the incident, authorities at the Dallas Zoo immediately shifted the remaining four lions away from public view.

Lynn Kramer, vice president of animal operations and welfare at the Dallas Zoo, said, "This is a very rare and unfortunate occurrence. In my 35 years as a veterinarian in zoos, I've never seen this happen".
