Every day we hear about a new computer, smartphone, radio, appliance, tablet or other device. Our cars even have dashboards that talk to us. How does all this technology contribute to a greener lifestyle?
The Advantages of Technology
Of course, using cloud-based word processing and email versus snail mail reduces the amount of trees we consume. Computers and technology even allow us to have junk mail and bills sent to us that otherwise would’ve required a stamp, an envelope and several sheets of paper.
Furthermore, manufacturers are learning more sophisticated ways to build all computerized equipment. They now require far less space and far less materials than ever before, and they also consume less energy to run. Items made now also require less landfill space.
Disadvantages of Technology
Although much more stuff is now recycled than in the past, landfills still remain quite full. If we keep making more electronic and computer devices we don’t need, we could eventually run out of places to store the trash.
However, electronic devices, computers and computerized parts also cause invisible pollution. Unseen rays emit from radios, microwaves, laptops, printers, phones and other equipment.
This electricity by-product has not been considered as harmful as car exhaust or toxic chemicals. However, we have become more aware of the psychological effects, which include increased anxiety, paranoia, panic, mood swings and aggressive behavior. Electronic and radio waves could also damage our nerves and cause tumors.
So Should We Continue Making New Things?
Technology helps us produce faster and communicate in more ways than we have before. It also helps us make our food and travel from one place to the next in shorter times.
However, we still have to make a conscious choice to conserve energy and resources. Furthermore, we have to stay safe and produce as little pollution as possible.
