Many people assume that people who work from home have an overabundance of free time for hitting the gym. But many professional freelancers might strongly disagree. For those who are operating their own business, either from home or from a “brick and mortar” location, the chaos and stress can seem never-ending.

Dr. Judith Wurtman of the Huffington Post is asking, “Why should exercise be a luxury”? There always seems to be something that keeps us from working out regularly. Unexpected deadlines, long commute times, and client meetings that drag on endlessly are just a few of the obstacles that we very often face, both freelancers and traditional employees alike.

But freelancing professionals may have the upper hand. By exercising in the privacy of their own home, freelancers can save travel time. Freelancers can also entertain a wide variety of oddly fun activities that can sometimes be rather embarrassing when performed in front of a gym filled with buff bodies.

Get your game on! There are all kinds of fitness video games that make exercise a great deal more fun, from “Zumba” to “Dancing to the Oldies” and “ Zombies, Run”. The ABC News Video above talks of taking “5 Minutes Fitness Breaks” several times throughout the day. Keep a set of dumbbells next to your desk. Pump some iron every time you get a phone call. Install a portable chin-up bar in the doorway of your home office. Every time you walk through the door, do 10 chin-ups. Replace your desk chair with an exercise ball. This works your abs and improves your posture. Jump rope when you need a boost of energy or a healthy “brainstorming” session. Set your computer timer to go off every 90 minutes. When the alarm rings, hit the deck and do 20 pushups.

A recent article in the Bloomberg Businessweek reports that exercising with clients and co-workers is not highly recommended . One of the most significant benefits of exercise is the reduction of stress. Hitting the gym with those clients and co-workers only leads to more “shop talk” which increases your stress levels even further. Freelancers who work from home may not have as many co-workers to worry about. And their clients may very well reside in entirely different countries altogether. As New Year’s resolutions begin to take hold, freelancing professionals may not have it as bad as they thought.
