If MySpace sent you embarrassing photos you took of yourself in 2005, would you go back to it? Apparently that’s the tactic they’re using to lure back the masses who left the social networking site when it fell out of vogue.

According to Mashable on Monday, MySpace is sending out emails containing a few photos and the line: “ the good, the rad and the what were you thinking…” It seems a little “crazy ex” of them to remind you that they have something you may have forgotten about. But look how much fun that was! We were happy once, right former MySpace user? MySpace says it has about 15 billion user photos in its database, so a MySpace email may be heading your way with a blast from the past.

Maybe they’re hoping once you log back in to take down those awful 2005 photos, you’ll be wowed by MySpace’s January 2013 facelift. But from here, that seems really unlikely. MySpace is calling this effort, “reaching out to current and past users to re-engage them through a personalized experience.” But if you and all your friends were part of the mass exodus, there’s nothing all that personal waiting for you at MySpace.

Maybe nostalgia is the way to get at some people, and perhaps even a little guilt and blackmail, but we don’t see this approach working to bring anyone back to MySpace. Now, the site is popular with bands and fans of music . However, people can also enjoy a similar experience right where they are, with band pages on Facebook or Twitter.

If you deleted your account, or have since graduated on from the email address you were using in the early 2000s, you will be spared this awkward invasion in your inbox. However, if your account is still active, it might be worth a quick glance to see exactly what MySpace has got on you.

Do you know anyone still on MySpace? Is it worth anyone’s time to really go back and start ‘re-engaging?’
