On September 11, actress Danièle Watts was walking down the street with her husband and showing him affection. She shared on Facebook she was handcuffed and detained by two police officers from the Studio City Police Department.
Her crime? She was making out with her partner, Brian James Lucas. A man from a nearby office told them to "stop putting on a show," and the police arrived soon after.
Watts played CoCo in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and currently stars in Martin Lawrence Vehicle Partners . .
When the officers asked Watts to produce a photo ID when questioned, she refused. Interestingly enough, her partner Brian James Lucas did not appear to receive similar treatment.
After she refused she was handcuffed and placed in the back of the police car.
As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!! from Watts' Facebook page.
The photo included was here minutes after the detainment. She is not wearing anything revealing or that would make her seem like she was soliciting sexual favors.
Does not producing an ID mean that you are guilty of a crime? Does making out with your partner make you a criminal? Was this racially motivated? Let me know what you think in the comments.
