Have you heard about Ello, the so-called anti-Facebook? The latest in the social media biz has been making waves for the people who like to stay on the cutting edge of social media and those are tired of the other more ad-driven sites. The site rolled out on late last week.

"We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate – but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life."- The Founders of Ello wrote.

Ello is currently in its beta form and you have to either be invited by a friend or request an invite from the company. Each user receives five invites to send to friends. The site has no ads, no lists or circles. You either have friends or noise. There's no real privacy setting here, however, your information isn't at risk to being sold either so that's a plus. Everything is fair game on Ello. The design is a basic black and white. It is a paired down and minimalist site, though users have been complaining about the light pages being harder to see.

However, it is not all beautiful with the site. There have been rumors going around that the owners have nearly $500,000 funding from a venture capitalist firm. VCs invest money into tech startups, so they can cash out later, according to The Guardian . However, the plan seems to be to get funding later via the premium paid features that haven't been rolled out yet.

The question still remains: Is Ello really the anti-Facebook or is it just a matter of time before it has ads, like the rest of the social media networks?
