The death of actor and director Leonard Nimoy on Friday has resulted in a number of tributes from Hollywood, Star Trek Fans and even an astronaut aboard the International Space Station. According to tech news site The Verge , the actor best known his portrayal of the half-Vulcan Science Officer Mister Spock will have a virtual memorial within the massively multiplayer online game Star Trek Online (STO) . Video game news site Polygon reported on Saturday that the memorial will appear in-game following a regularly scheduled maintenance update of the game on March 5.
In a post to the STO online forum announcing the memorial, Steve Ricossa, executive producer of the game, wrote"In this way, we hope to keep his memory as alive in our game as he is in all of our hearts.LLAP (Live Long and Prosper)."
Following news of Nimoy's death on Friday, at least 1,000 players traveled in game to Spock's home world of Vulcan to pay their respects. STO has approximately 2.5 million unique player accounts and 3,8 million characters played by them.
Leonard Nimoy voiced the character of Spock in the game and did narration voice-overs describing various locales within the game. He also appeared at a 2008 event announcing the game at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. In addition to his work for STO, he also did voice-over narration for the games Seaman and Civilization IV.
