The old school comic strip, Dick Tracy , was first published in 1938, and one of the striking things about the series was Tracy’s use of high tech gadgetry such as two-way wrist radios and wrist TVs to track down criminals and solve crimes.

Today, reality has caught up with fiction as speculation from the press indicates that Apple may be developing a smartwatch that would go beyond the capabilities of those featured in the comics and science fiction stories.

The reports

Stories featured in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal two days ago cited sources that said Apple was in the stages of experimentation for a device made of curved glass that could be worn on the wrist. The Apple smartwatch would run iOS and have functionality similar to an iPhone.

The iWatch cometh

At the moment, details are quite sketchy about the new smartwatch from Apple. But the mere fact that stories are coming from alleged inside sources about the company’s interest in developing such a product is certainly good news for shareholders and Apple fans.

Since the passing of Steve Jobs in 2011, industry watchers have been concerned about the state of Apple, as far as producing future innovative products. If there is an iWatch on the horizon from Apple, it would certainly give a boost to company’s image as a front runner in developing new tech.

What will it have?

A smartwatch could conceivably be the forerunner to a possible replacement for some smart phone functions. The device could receive and send calls, of course, but it could also duplicate many of the tasks found on smartphones such contact lists, voice activated emails, scheduler, calendar, MP3 player, calculator, and more.

Will people buy it? That depends on the initial price points and how much functionality can be jammed into such a small space. As the saying goes, time will tell.
